Fort Mose
Tucked into the back corner, Fort Mose is our most private and secluded room. Warm, textural and designed for slowing down.
Beyond the design, Fort Mose’s legacy lives here. Just two miles north of the inn sits America’s first legally sanctioned free Black settlement, a place of refuge, resilience, and strength that marked the southernmost end of the courageous and remarkable Underground Railroad.
Step outside onto your sun-splashed, plant-filled private deck for a quiet morning coffee or a slow evening wind-down. This precious and spacious room is perfect for guests seeking comfort with meaning, where a restful stay is shaped by both beauty and history.
Traveling with friends? Sarabi is the closest room.

The Fort
From Josie,
Fort Mose (pronounced moh-say) was the first room name I was sure of. I cherish that such an incredible and important piece of American history is so nearby the inn and it was important to me to honor it here.
I highly recommend this article where you can learn about Florida’s significant history with race, Saint Augustine’s beginning until now, the complicated man who spent his life trying to find Fort Mose, and the southern end of the Underground Railroad—the first part of our country where people of color were free to choose and create their own lives.

Fort Mose is a first floor room in the back of the inn. Go up the back steps, take a right at Sarabi and it is in the back corner.
